HOW DOES THE POLYGRAPH WORK?
When a person is confronted by a real life dangerous situation, the body automatically responds with the adrenaline response, known as the 'flight or fight' syndrome. It is preparing itself to stand and fight that situation, or run away from it. When a person KNOWINGLY tells a lie, the body thinks that it is in a dangerous situation due to the potential of being discovered in that lie. The telling of that lie is therefore psychologically dangerous and the brain does not distinguish between psychological danger and the real life danger. It responds in the same manner to both.
This response is manifested by the release of adrenaline into the blood stream. This causes an increase in physiological activity within the body (this is a response from the autonomic nervous system and cannot, almost exclusively, be stopped). The polygraph measures the differences between these heightened activity levels and a person’s normal levels.
The three parameters most usually measured are the variations in blood volume flow, alterations in breathing patterns and differences in the electro dermal activity, or sweat gland activity. These are the traces that are seen on the print out of a polygraph examination.
